How Much Does It Actually Cost to Move Back to Africa?

Flights are just the beginning. I calculated the true one-time relocation cost — and it was 40% higher than I expected.

How Much Does It Actually Cost to Move Back to Africa?

When most people think about the cost of moving back home, they think flights. A $1,200 ticket from Dubai to Douala, maybe $500 for excess baggage, and you're done, right? Wrong. So very wrong.

I built the Relocation Budget calculator because every estimate I found online was either too generic ('budget $5,000-10,000') or too specific to Western expats moving between developed countries. Nobody was talking about the true cost of an African diaspora return — the document authentication, the temp housing, the deposits, the surprise customs fees.

So I calculated it. Here's what I found.

The Sticker vs. The Reality

For a family of 4 returning from the UAE to Cameroon, here's what the Relocation Budget calculator produced with realistic inputs:

That's $26,300 for a family of 4. The 'sticker' cost — just flights — was $4,800. The true cost was 5.5x higher.

Even for a solo returner (family size 1), the total came to $14,500. That's a number most diaspora haven't calculated — and it's the number that determines whether your return is possible in 2 years or 5.

The Hidden Costs Nobody Warns You About

Three categories consistently surprise people when they run the calculator:

  • Document authentication: Birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas — each needs apostille ($20-80 per document), notarization, and embassy authentication. For 10+ documents, that's $500-1,000 you didn't budget for.
  • Temp housing: Your long-term rental won't be ready on day 1. Landlords in many African countries require 1-2 years upfront from diaspora. While you wait, you're in a serviced apartment or Airbnb — often 2-3x normal rent. Budget 4-8 weeks.
  • The misc buffer: Customs clearing, vehicle registration, school enrollment mid-term, utility connection fees. Add 15-25% on top of everything. You'll use it.

How to Use This Number

Once you know your relocation cost, divide it by your monthly savings (from the Savings Rate calculator) to see how many months of dedicated saving it'll take. For example, if your relocation cost is $20,000 and you save $800/month, that's 25 months — just for the move, before you've saved anything for your post-return runway.

This is why the Stay or Go assessment weighs Relocation Budget at 15% of the total score. It's not the biggest dimension, but it's the one most people underestimate — and the one that delays returns the most.

Run the Relocation Budget calculator yourself. Use realistic numbers for your family size and destination. The true cost might be higher than you think — but knowing is infinitely better than guessing.
